New LEED-Certified CityCenter Complex Incorporates PVC Building Components
LAS VEGAS, Nev., June 10, 2010 ‒ CityCenter, the $8.5 billion hotel, retail, and entertainment complex that was recently completed on the bustling Las Vegas Strip, has introduced several innovative design elements aimed at creating an environmentally sustainable community in the heart of the city, including the use of PVC pipes and vinyl roofing membranes.

The following CityCenter buildings - the ARIA gaming resort, the Mandarin Oriental hotel, the Vdara Hotel and Spa, Veer Towers residences, and the Crystals retail and entertainment district – have received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)® Gold recognitions, given by the U.S. Green Building Council.  This is the highest LEED achievement by any hotel, retail district, or residential development in Las Vegas.

Contributing to the development’s efforts in environmental sustainability were a large-scale recycling operation processing 80 percent of construction waste from the imploded Boardwalk Hotel, stretch limousines powered by compressed natural gas, air conditioning units in the bases of slot machines to cool guests from the ground up rather than from the ceiling, the strategic use of PVC materials, and self-generated energy from its own natural gas co-generation plant.

At Crystals, the 500,000 square foot retail and entertainment district, PVC pipe was installed in the concrete floor of the building, and hot or cold water is pumped through it.  Heating or cooling visitors to Crystals is maintained at floor level, rather than wasting energy from overhead.  Hot air rises to the ceiling, along with dust and other pollutants that are filtered out of the building.

Crystals and other portions of the City Center complex also benefit from durable and energy-efficient vinyl roofing membranes.

Crystals is the world’s largest retail district to receive the LEED® Gold Core and Shell certification.

S. Richard Fedrizzi, President and CEO of the U.S. Green Building Council, said, “From its intense focus on water conservation to the multiple strategies for energy efficiency, the CItyCenter team has delivered several exceptional properties that qualify for the LEED Gold rating.  Extreme climates challenge the most creative of project teams, and the CityCenter team has risen to the occasion and then some.  We congratulate them on their significant achievement.”

Bobby Baldwin, President and CEO of City Center, said, “From its inception to design, development, and construction, we had one single goal in mind for City Center:  to create a destination that is not only built in an environmentally sustainable manner, but also operates every day with an equal commitment to conserving natural resources.”
